Can you hard-reset an Omnia Qwerty?

Only just back from vacation LocalJoost just asked me a question I don't know the answer to, based on his review of his current Samsung: can you use a hardware button combination to hard reset an Omnia Qwerty?

Contrary to my normal default behavior I sort of skipped reading the manual on this phone, so I really have no idea. I'll investigate and if I find anything, I'll let you know...

  1. Simple answer: between the stylus and the lock key (same height as the camera lens and LED flash) is little hole with a receded reset button that you can press with a paperclip or something like that. So you can hard reset the Omnia Qwerty.

  2. Hey Peshir, isn't what you describe as a simple answer actually called a "soft reset"? I know, it doesn't make sense for anybody who is used to computers, but the words "hard" and "soft" seem to have nothing to do with hardware or software.
On this kind of devices a soft reset is the equivalent of switching the power off and on again: the little hole is there to be used when the device is frozen so you cannot switch it off normally anymore.
A hard reset, on the other hand, has nothing to do with our idea of resetting: it brings the device back to its original state when you bought it - I would call it "format the disk and reinstall the OS". By the way, on the Omnia Pro (Qwerty) you can do that from the Settings by selecting Memory Settings and then Clear Memory. So a hard reset is pretty much a software reset, while the so-called soft reset is mostly done via hardware :-)

  3. I'd have to check the manual (or try it out...) to see which of the two kinds of resets this actually is. Needless to see I still hope I never have to use it! ;-)

  4. If you change the language, and then change it back it does the full reset but i'm sure there must be a simpler way.

  5. In case of a bricked device, changing the language would be impossible, so you would need a key/switch or key combo (in hardware, what I called "hard reset") to get it going in that case.

Again: I hope I'll never need it (but see elsewhere: I already thought I'd had to remove te battery once), but in that I hope the sunked reset switch works as expcted.

  6. I found this on xda-developers.com, but haven't tried it:

...press soft reset, release and immediately pres button "Volume UP" + lock key and hold it until it ask you for Hard reset or cancel...

  7. Question about soft or hard reset is resolved, as I have had to use the dreaded button: http://peshir.blogspot.com/2009/10/what-is-wrong-with-me-part-2.html
